Review Remnants of Filth

Oh my goodness, I just finished Remnants of Filth: Yuwu (Novel) Vol. 5, and I'm still buzzing! This series has completely captivated me, and this volume was no exception. I absolutely adore the intricate storyline, the compelling characters, and the gorgeous art (if this is a graphic novel, assuming the art reference is relevant). Mo Xi and Gu Mang's journey is just so emotionally resonant; seeing them finally have a chance at peace after eight years of battling lies and misunderstandings is incredibly satisfying, even knowing it's bittersweet and temporary. The tension between their hard-won happiness and the encroaching threat of Gu Mang's fading memories and the dark magic is masterfully done – it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The authors, Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou and St, have crafted such a rich and immersive world.

The way the story weaves together personal struggles with epic conflicts is brilliant. The impending Liao Kingdom attack adds another layer of complexity, forcing our beloved characters to confront not just internal demons but external enemies of immense power. The promise of uncovering Chonghua's darkest secrets adds a thrilling mystery element, making me eager to see how everything unfolds. Seriously, the plot is so well-paced; it's exciting and heartbreaking all at once. I found myself completely invested in every character’s fate, rooting for them to overcome every obstacle. Meatbun, as someone mentioned, is truly a queen! (And if you know, you know.)

Now, I do want to address the elephant in the room: the page count. At only 288 pages of story content, it felt significantly shorter than the previous volumes, and much shorter than what I’m accustomed to from similar books (350-400 pages). I understand that this is likely a publishing issue with 7Seas, and it's frustrating that the quality of the story was impacted by the shortness of the book. I'm incredibly disappointed by this; it left me wanting more, especially after waiting months for the release. It feels a bit anticlimactic to such a rich and emotional arc. The physical copy arrived in perfect condition, so there are no complaints there, and the packaging was excellent. It's just that the brevity of the volume really overshadowed the otherwise fantastic experience.

Despite this, my overall feeling about Remnants of Filth: Yuwu Vol. 5 is overwhelmingly positive. The writing is superb, the characters are unforgettable, and the story itself is captivating. It's a must-read for fans of the series, and I highly recommend it even with the caveat about the page count. Just be aware of the shorter length going in, so you're not as surprised as I was. I impatiently await the next volume!
